Dr. Cindy Chan is a Registered Clinical Psychologist of the Division of Clinical Psychology of Hong Kong Psychological Society (DCP, HKPS), who provides services including psychological assessment and treatment for adolescents, adults and elderly. She is an Associate Fellow of HKPS and past Vice Chairperson of DCP, HKPS. Dr. Chan graduated at the University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree, major in Psychology in 1994. To further pursue her study, she completed a diploma program at the Department of Counseling Psychology at the University of British Columbia, Canada. She also obtained a Master of Social Sciences (Clinical Psychology) degree at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Doctorate degree in Psychology (Clinical Psychology) at the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Chan is professionally trained at the Beck Institute of Cognitive Therapy and Research, and currently a Diplomate of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Dr. Chan is also trained intensively by Dr. Leslie Greenberg in Emotion-focused Therapy. She has also received training by Dr. Jeffery Young in Schema Therapy. She has completed an intensive training for conducting Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy organized by Oxford Mindfulness Centre in UK and Hong Kong Mindfulness Centre.
Dr. Chan worked with the Hospital Authority at the Castle Peak Hospital in Hong Kong from 2001 to 2008. During this period, she served the Department of General Adult Psychiatry, Department of Forensic Psychiatry, and Department of Psychogeriatrics. She also worked in the outpatient Forensic Clinic at the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. Dr. Chan is experienced in conducting psychological and forensic assessment, as well as psychological treatment for adolescents, adults, and elderly. She has ample experience in assessing patients with intellectual disabilities, cognitive impairment and degenerative illnesses, such as dementia. She also treats various cases with different psychiatric illnesses, such as Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Eating Disorders, and Personality Disorders. As a clinical psychologist working in the Department of Forensic Psychiatry in Hong Kong, Dr. Chan was responsible for the forensic assessment for court. She was repeatedly appointed as expert witness in court. Dr. Chan is the ex-member of the Guardianship Board and ex-member of the Post-release Supervision Board of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. She regularly attended hearings for guardianship orders for mentally incapacitated persons and supervision orders for prisoners. Dr. Chan is the honorary consultant of Mental Health Foundation and the Regenerative Society Mental Health Resource Centre, Hong Kong. Dr. Chan also participates in the Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation – Psychiatric Medical and Clinical Psychological Subsidy Project.
Apart from her clinical duties, Dr. Chan was also frequently invited to give lectures and workshops to professionals and general public. She was appointed as Honorary Assistant Clinical Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong. Appointed as Honorary Clinical Supervisor in the Departments of Psychology of the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, she made her share of contribution to the training of local Clinical Psychologists. She had supervised Master level clinical psychology trainees from these two universities in their clinical practicum. She was also regularly invited to deliver lectures to psychiatric trainees in the Hong Kong Central Academic Course of the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists. She also provides consultancy services for the Student Counselling Unit of the City University of Hong Kong. She conducted workshops and talks for the general public and corporate clients in various topics, including psychiatric illnesses, positive psychology, stress management, mindfulness and relationship issues. Dr. Chan was also interviewed by various newspapers, magazines, TV and radio programs. She was also a columnist in magazines and newspapers in Hong Kong.
